Adam Gushgari of ASU will be presenting on Wastewater Epidemiology and how his work detects concentrations of narcotics in sewage to obtain insight into the drug use patterns of residents within a specific city/area. They look for a suite of narcotics, such as opioids (morphine, heroin, fentanyl), prescriptions (ritalin, adderall), and other illicit narcotics (methamphetamine, cocaine, PCP) within wastewater samples and use the data as a hard metric to better understand the drug usage patterns within a specific city. They can use the data to estimate a good number of statistics such as average mass consumed, number of drug consumers within a given region, and even the number of overdose and overdose-related deaths that we would expect to occur based upon the levels of observed narcotics within the sewage.
