Councils: How we come together

Arizona Water has five councils with generally five to six committees and recognized sub-committees grouped in a council by similar committee missions and goals. The five councils are in alignment with Arizona Water Association Strategic Objectives and are as follows:

  • Advocacy

  • Educate

  • Environmental Stewardship

  • Infrastructure

  • Member Involvement

The Board-Council-Committee structure provides the following benefits to our members:

  • Enhances educational, training, networking opportunities, and leadership programs to help water professionals advance their careers.

  • Promotes a sustainable, growing, and diverse workforce

  • Supports appropriate and continued investment in water resources, watersheds, water quality and water infrastructure

  • Helps communicate important water and environmental issues to the public and key stakeholders

  • Provides resources and training designed to help utilities invest and operate efficiently

The Board-Council-Committee structure provides the following committee benefits:

  • Provides member-driven collaboration between committees.

  • Facilitates a strong interface between thriving and struggling committees and assists struggling committees.

  • Supports delegation and execution of AZ Water initiatives across multiple parties.

  • Opens opportunities for ideas and involvement beyond committees and below the Board.

Councils are composed of a committee chair person or their delegate and one other committee delegate from each committee or sub-committee, and two AZ Water Board members.  The AZ Water Board members are non-voting members of a council unless they are a committee chair or delegate.

Councils will meet at least once per quarter.  It is intended that they would rotate quarterly meetings at a committee meeting in place of the committee meeting for that month. This gives committee members the chance to see a council in action.   As with the AZ Water Board meeting, council meetings will be open for any AZ Water member to attend.

Council goals and expectations include:

  • Provide a forum for committee collaboration

  • Schedule / coordinate events

  • Set consistent event pricing

  • Enhance AZ Water Strategic Plan implementation

  • Further Business Plan initiative coordination and collaboration

  • Support consistent messaging to committees and membership

  • Facilitate resource sharing opportunities

  • Offer more leadership development opportunities

  • Solicit members to serve on committees and volunteer

  • Pass on “highlights,” critical decisions, committee activity status and summary reports once per month to board liaisons
